Diffusion engine

At the dawn of spaceflight, rocket engines were used; later, ion engines came into use. Both types had drawbacks: rocket engines required large amounts of fuel, while ion engines provided very little thrust. The diffusion engine was a hybrid of the two. It works by ionizing hydrogen and then accelerating protons and electrons separately. Near-light exhaust velocities give these engines impressive thrust. The fuel is hydrogen, which is easily obtained from the upper atmospheres of gas giants.
